Have you just thrown a weekend BBQ and now you’re wondering what on earth to do with the copious amounts of leftovers? One thing we can say for sure is to not throw them away because we have some seriously delicious suggestions for how you can transform your leftover BBQ meat and veggies into meals that you can take to work, pack in the school lunch boxes or freeze to enjoy at a later date! Let’s chat about our top suggestions and tips for storing and using your yummy BBQ leftovers.
How to store in the fridge
The first thing you need to do is to decide which leftovers you’ll be eating first so that you can make space in the fridge. Just be mindful that you do need to follow food safety guidelines so that you’re not keeping any food in there for longer than they should be. Separate any raw and cooked meats, and maybe even arrange food in portion size containers to make it easy to pull out of the fridge on your way to work, or straight into the kids’ lunchboxes.
What to freeze and for how long
If you feel like you’ve had your share of BBQ leftovers for the time being, the good news is that foods like meats, vegetables, casseroles, tomato-based food, bread or other flour-based meals such as pizza are all freezable! And you can keep them in the freezer for up to 6 months too. Just ensure you portion each of the food items and label them so that defrosting them is hassle free. Another handy tip is to use proper containers or storage bags to save space in your freezer.
Recreating new dishes
Now, the fun part! It’s time to get creative with your leftover dishes! Recreate new dishes by turning your meat and veggies into delicious sandwiches, wraps or souvlakis, fried rice, salads, soups, quesadillas or even skewers. Here are a few of our favourite suggestions that will hopefully get you started.
